The Sarpy County Period Project
Who we are
The Sarpy County Period Project is a collaborative effort to end menstrual inequity in Sarpy County’s four school districts. Through partnerships with private foundations, community leaders, and Access Period, every school in Sarpy County will be provided with period products for their students.
Why this matters
Period supplies help students stay in school
Nearly 1 in 4 US students have struggled to afford period products.
44% of teens report stress and embarrassment due to last of access to period products.
Missing just one day of school each month can make it harder for students to develop basic skills, and by ninth grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than test scores.
…but they aren’t covered by any government safety net programs
While families can receive coverage and services through Medicaid and WIC, individuals still struggle to access the material basic necessities they require to thrive.
A survey of 1,500 Nebraskans who received free period products found that 1 in 4 respondents had missed school or work due to lack of access to period products.
The need
In Sarpy County’s four school districts, 2,500 girls from 5th-12th grade qualify for free and reduced lunch. Students whose families experience financial hardship are the most likely to experience period poverty.
To fully meet the need, we need to provide 750,000+ pads and tampons to Bellevue Public Schools, Papillion La Vista Community Schools, Platteview Public Schools, and Gretna Public Schools.
